Applicants for a UK Standard Visitor Visa and many other UK visa categories will usually be asked to provide supporting evidence. How you provide this evidence depends on the application route, where you apply from, and how you prove your identity. Applicants may be able to upload documents online, use a commercial partner website, or pay for an assisted scanning service at their appointment, depending on the application route and provider.
This 2026 guide explains how to prepare digital copies and upload supporting documents where online upload is available. Applicants should follow their GOV.UK checklist and the instructions from VFS Global, TLScontact or UKVCAS, depending on where and how they apply.
Overview: The Digital Upload Process
- Complete your UK visa application and pay the required fee online.
- Book your biometric appointment.
- Gather and scan all supporting documents.
- Upload your documents online using the relevant provider portal, commercial partner website, or application service where this option is available.
- Attend your appointment if required. If you cannot upload documents yourself, you may be able to use an assisted scanning or document upload service at your appointment where available.
Accepted File Types and Formats (2026)
- PDF, PNG, JPG or JPEG, depending on whether the document is scanned or photographed and on the upload service used.
- File size limits vary by application service and provider. Check the upload instructions in your application account or provider portal before uploading.
- All documents must be clear, legible, and in English or Welsh (or accompanied by a certified translation).
Where to Upload Your Documents
VFS Global Applicants
If your Visa Application Centre is managed by VFS Global, use the
VFS Global UK Document Upload Portal
to upload your files. You may be able to scan or upload documents through the relevant VFS Global service where this option is available. Follow the instructions in your VFS Global account.
TLS Contact Applicants
If your application is processed through TLS Contact, upload your documents through the
TLS Contact Portal.
Log in using the same email you used for your visa application to access your case dashboard.
Document Categories to Upload
Upload your supporting evidence under the correct category headings. Misplaced or missing uploads can delay consideration of your application or lead to a request for further evidence.
- Travel Evidence: Passport or travel document, travel history, intended travel dates and details of your planned visit. Flight bookings should only be provided where relevant, such as for transit applications.
- Financial Evidence: Bank statements, payslips, and sponsor letters (see Proof of Funds for UK Visitor Visa).
- Accommodation: Details of where you plan to stay during your visit, such as host details or other relevant accommodation information.
- Employment or Study: Employer letter, student status letter, or enrolment proof.
- Relationship Documents: Birth or marriage certificates if visiting family or a sponsor.
Common Upload Errors (and How to Fix Them)
- Blurry or cropped scans: Use flatbed scanners or camera apps with auto-crop disabled.
- Wrong category: Double-check before final submission, category names differ slightly between VFS and TLS portals.
- Multiple files per field: Merge related documents into one PDF per category (e.g., combine all payslips).
- Missing translations: Upload translated versions alongside the original file.
Using “Document Scanning Assistance” at VACs
If you cannot upload documents online, you may request scanning assistance at your appointment. This paid service, where available, allows staff to scan and upload your documents for you. Fees vary by provider, location and service selected. Ensure you bring originals and any required translations.
After You Upload Documents
- Check your confirmation email or on-screen message for “Document Upload Successful.”
- Bring physical copies to your appointment in case staff need to verify authenticity.
- Your application cannot usually be considered until you have provided your identity information and submitted the supporting evidence required for your application.
Top Tips for 2026 Applications
- Use filenames that clearly describe each document (e.g., “Bank_Statements_Jan–Mar2026.pdf”).
- Do not zip or password-protect files; they will not upload correctly.
- Upload your documents by the deadline given in your application account or provider portal.
- Keep digital copies of all files for your records in case you need to refer to them later, provide further evidence, or make a new application.
