The UK Standard Visitor Visa (often called the UK Visitor Visa) permits short stays in the UK for tourism, visiting family or friends, limited business activity, short-term study, private medical treatment, or specific testing (e.g., PLAB/OSCE). The usual maximum stay is up to 6 months per visit.
You must demonstrate you are a genuine visitor, that you can fund your trip without using public funds, and that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit. This page explains the UK Standard Visitor Visa in clear, structured terms: eligibility requirements, permitted and non-permitted activities, required documents, fees, processing, extension options, and how to apply online. It also signposts related guidance to help you prepare a complete application.
Depending on your nationality, reason for travel and personal circumstances, you may need a Standard Visitor visa, an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), another form of permission, or no visa/ETA. Please check what permission you need before applying.

Applications for a UK Standard Visitor Visa are made online before travelling. You must complete an online application form, pay the relevant fee, and attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) appointment for biometrics, fingerprints and a photograph — unless eligible to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app.
Average decision times are around 3 weeks from your biometric appointment, depending on the complexity of your case and local appointment availability. Delays are often caused by missing evidence or inconsistent information. Priority and super-priority services may be available for an additional fee in some locations.
If you realise you have provided incorrect or inconsistent information before your biometric appointment, you can cancel and reapply, or submit a correction letter when attending. Accuracy and consistency across your form and supporting documents are essential to avoid credibility issues or refusal.
Tip: Keep copies of all uploaded documents and your application summary page. This helps track details if you need to reapply or seek advice after a refusal.
Certain visitors must submit extra evidence based on their purpose:
The full process, form submission, document upload, appointment booking, and decision, typically takes 3–6 weeks total. The main delay factor is often appointment availability. Errors or missing information can also cause your case to be paused for manual review.
You may apply to extend a UK Standard Visitor Visa if you meet strict conditions and apply before your current permission expires. Normally, a Standard Visitor can stay in the UK for up to 6 months. Limited exceptions apply, including private medical treatment, academic visits, PLAB retakes and clinical attachments.
To apply, you must complete the online extension form, pay the Home Office extension fee, and provide biometric information again. Evidence of ongoing purpose and sufficient funds is required.
Note: Overstaying your visa without a pending extension application can result in a re-entry ban or future refusals. Always apply before your current permission ends.
If your application is refused, you will receive a written decision letter from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) explaining the reasons and which Immigration Rules were applied. Refusals are common where evidence is incomplete or inconsistent, but most can be resolved through reapplication or review.

In some cases, yes (e.g., 2 or 5 years). Each visit remains limited to 6 months.
If you visit the UK frequently, you may apply for a long-term Visitor visa. This visa is valid for two, five, or ten years. On each visit, you may remain for a maximum of 6 months. If you apply while under the age of 18, your long-term visa will only be valid for 6 months after you reach the age of 18.
A Standard Visitor visa obtained prior to travel from outside the UK is a multiple-entry visa, allowing you to return to the UK as long as your visa is valid.
The visitor is only allowed to remain in the United Kingdom for a maximum of six months from the date of admission (or up to the expiry date on the visa, whichever is soonest)
There are no restrictions on the number of trips or the amount of time tourists may spend in the UK in any 12-month period. If you spend more time in the UK than in your home country, the Immigration Officer may have reason to suspect you live in the UK.
Overstaying your visa without good justification is a criminal offence. You will not be able to work legally, and if detected, you might risk a jail term.
Your application for a visa will be denied if a caseworker has reason to believe that you are living in the United Kingdom through frequent or consecutive visits, despite the fact that there is no specific maximum amount of time you can spend in the United Kingdom in any given period, as long as each visit does not exceed 6 months.
Generally, a visitor visa permits multiple entries within its validity, subject to border control discretion.
Check your vignette/validity dates. You must travel within the permitted window.
There’s no fixed number, but frequent/back-to-back stays can be viewed as living in the UK, which is not allowed.
Most applications are decided on documents, but interviews can occur case-by-case.
Visitor routes generally do not allow switching in the UK.
Overstaying can affect future applications. Seek guidance immediately if you think you might overstay.
