Proof of Funds for a Luxembourg Visa

Proof of Funds for a Luxembourg Visa (2026)

  3. Proof of Funds for a Luxembourg Visa (2026)

When applying for a Luxembourg visa, applicants must show sufficient financial means to support themselves during their stay. Proof of funds demonstrates that you have sufficient personal resources for the duration of your intended stay and for your return to your country of origin or residence, or onward travel to a third country.

Proof of Sufficient Financial Means (2026)

Luxembourg’s official short-stay guidance does not publish a fixed €100 per day minimum. Applicants must show sufficient personal resources for the duration of the intended stay and for return or onward travel, or provide evidence that they can legally obtain such resources. Applicants should provide evidence that the funds or support relied on are genuine, available and sufficient for the planned stay, return journey or onward travel.

Acceptable Forms of Proof of Funds

You may submit one or more of the following documents to demonstrate sufficient financial means:

  • Recent Bank Statements: Showing regular income and sufficient balance for the duration of your trip.
  • Salary Slips or Employment Letters: Proof of steady income or ongoing employment.
  • Tax Returns: Official income verification for self-employed applicants.
  • Credit cards or credit card statements: may be used as supporting evidence of available resources, but applicants should also provide clear evidence of sufficient funds and the source of those funds where required.
  • Traveller’s cheques, prepaid cards or cash: may be considered as supporting evidence where accepted by the consulate or border authority, but applicants should check the specific requirements for their application.
  • A legalised financial statement of support: from a reference person in Luxembourg may be used where a host or third party will cover expenses. This is not mandatory in every case, but it is strongly recommended where the applicant is financially supported by a Luxembourg resident.

See also: Sponsorship Letter Guide (2026).

Bank Statement Requirements

When submitting bank statements:

  • You should provide recent financial evidence required by the consulate, diplomatic mission or visa application centre handling your application. Where a financial statement of support is used, the guarantor is asked to provide their last three salary slips or other evidence of monthly income.
  • Statements must show the applicant’s name and account number.
  • Financial evidence should be genuine, clear and verifiable, and should meet the format required by the consulate, diplomatic mission or visa application centre handling your application.
  • Joint account holders must provide consent from the co-owner (if applicable).

Proof of Funds for Sponsored Applicants

If your expenses will be covered by another person or organisation, include:

  • A signed sponsorship letter confirming support.
  • Copy of the sponsor’s passport or national identity card and, if the sponsor is a foreign national, proof of lawful residence in Luxembourg.
  • The sponsor’s last three salary slips, or another document certifying monthly income, and any other evidence required for the financial statement of support.
  • Proof of relationship (if family-based support).

Proof of Funds for Students or Long-Stay Applicants

Applicants for study or long-stay visas must provide:

  • Proof of tuition payment or scholarship confirmation.
  • Evidence of sufficient resources to cover living expenses and return-travel costs. For certain long-stay student procedures, monthly resources must amount to at least 80% of the current social inclusion income in Luxembourg.
  • Relevant financial evidence from the applicant or sponsor, depending on the procedure, such as a scholarship or student loan certificate, bank certificate, bank statements, or a financial statement of support where accepted.

See: Documents Checklist (2026).

Documents Not Accepted as Proof of Funds

Avoid submitting:

  • Handwritten financial records or informal bank letters.
  • Unverified screenshots or documents that do not clearly identify the account holder, source of funds, available balance or issuing institution.
  • Cash declarations without documentation.

Tips for Submitting Financial Evidence

  • Follow the document format required by the consulate, diplomatic mission or visa application centre. You may need to provide originals, copies, certified copies or digital uploads depending on the application process.
  • Ensure financial evidence is recent and meets the requirements of the authority handling your application.
  • Translate documents if they are not in a language accepted by the authority handling your application. For Luxembourg visa procedures, documents are commonly accepted in German, French or English, but applicants should check the specific instructions for their application.
  • Combine multiple sources of income for stronger financial credibility.

Example: Financial Summary for a 10-Day Luxembourg Visit

For a 10-day stay, you should show that you have sufficient personal resources for the full duration of the planned stay and for your return or onward travel. The amount should be realistic for your accommodation, transport, meals and planned activities. Luxembourg’s official short-stay guidance does not publish a fixed €100 per day minimum.
