This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, Regulated Immigration Advisor, to ensure accuracy under current EU and Luxembourg immigration guidance. You can confirm current rates and costs through our Luxembourg Visa Application Guide.

When applying for a Luxembourg Visa, you may need to provide a sponsorship letter if someone else, such as a family member, friend, or company, will be covering your travel, accommodation, or living expenses during your stay. This document helps the Luxembourg embassy or consulate verify that you have sufficient financial and practical support during your visit.

What Is a Sponsorship Letter?

A sponsorship letter is a formal declaration written by your sponsor confirming that they will financially support you for the duration of your stay in Luxembourg. The sponsor may also provide accommodation, pay for flights, or assist with day-to-day expenses. The letter must be addressed to the Luxembourg embassy or consulate processing your visa application and must be signed and dated by the sponsor.

Who Can Act as a Sponsor?

The sponsor must be a person or organisation legally residing in Luxembourg or within the Schengen Area. Sponsors can include:

  • A family member living in Luxembourg or another Schengen country.
  • A friend hosting you for a short-term visit.
  • A Luxembourg-based employer inviting you for business purposes.
  • A university or academic institution providing official sponsorship for studies or research.

Information to Include in a Sponsorship Letter

The letter should be clear, formal, and include specific details to help the consulate assess the relationship and purpose of support. Key elements include:

  • Sponsor’s full name, date of birth, address, and contact details.
  • Applicant’s full name, date of birth, passport number, and relationship to sponsor.
  • Purpose of visit and length of stay in Luxembourg.
  • Type and amount of support offered (e.g., accommodation, travel, daily expenses).
  • Details of the sponsor’s financial status (employment, income, or savings evidence).
  • Sponsor’s signature and date.

Supporting Documents from the Sponsor

In addition to the letter, sponsors should provide documentation confirming their identity and ability to support the applicant. These may include:

  • Copy of the sponsor’s passport or residence permit.
  • Proof of address (utility bill, rental agreement, etc.).
  • Recent bank statements (3–6 months).
  • Employment certificate or recent payslips.
  • Proof of relationship (if applicable), such as birth or marriage certificates.

Example Sponsorship Letter

To: The Embassy of Luxembourg
Date: [Insert Date]

Dear Visa Officer,

I, [Sponsor’s Full Name], residing at [Sponsor’s Address], am writing to confirm that I will be sponsoring [Applicant’s Full Name] during their stay in Luxembourg from [Start Date] to [End Date].

I am the [relationship, e.g., brother/friend/employer] of the applicant and will cover their accommodation, travel costs, and living expenses during the entire stay. I have attached evidence of my financial capacity, including recent bank statements and proof of employment.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at [Sponsor’s Phone Number] or [Sponsor’s Email Address] should you require further information.

Yours faithfully,
[Sponsor’s Signature]
[Sponsor’s Full Name]

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting an unsigned or undated sponsorship letter.
  • Omitting proof of financial capacity.
  • Failing to explain the relationship between the applicant and the sponsor.
  • Not matching details in the sponsorship letter with those in the visa application form.

Additional Tips

Always submit the sponsorship letter alongside your Documents Checklist (2026) and ensure that the sponsor’s financial proof meets the Luxembourg visa requirements. Sponsors based outside Luxembourg should still include verifiable identity and contact information to assist consular verification.
