  3. Luxembourg Visa Documents Checklist (2026)

Submitting the correct supporting documents is a crucial part of your Luxembourg visa application. Missing or incomplete paperwork is one of the most common reasons for visa delays or refusals. This checklist outlines common supporting documents for Luxembourg short-stay Schengen visa applications and general document considerations for long-stay national procedures. Exact requirements depend on your nationality, purpose of stay and the authority handling your application.

Core Documents for Schengen Visa Applications

Applicants should check the document checklist issued by the relevant consulate, diplomatic mission or visa application centre. Common documents may include:

  • Completed Visa Application Form: Printed and signed.
  • Valid Travel Document: Must have been issued within the last 10 years, contain at least two blank pages, and be valid for at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen Area.
  • Recent Passport Photos: Two identical photos, 35×45 mm, meeting ICAO standards.
  • Travel Medical Insurance: Minimum coverage of €30,000, valid throughout the Schengen Area and covering emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Hotel booking, rental agreement, or invitation letter from a host.
  • Travel Itinerary or Transport Reservation: Return travel information or reservation, where required. Avoid buying non-refundable tickets before your visa is issued unless instructed otherwise.
  • Proof of Funds: See Proof of Funds (2026) for detailed guidance.
  • Visa Fee Payment Receipt: Proof of payment of the visa application fee.

Additional Documents by Visa Type

1. Tourist or Visitor Visa

  • Detailed travel itinerary (cities, dates, planned activities).
  • Invitation letter (if visiting friends/family).
  • Proof of relationship to host, if applicable.

2. Business Visa

  • Invitation letter from the Luxembourg company, stating purpose and duration of visit.
  • Proof of business registration for both companies.
  • Previous business correspondence (if applicable).

3. Work or Employment Stay

  • Employment contract or job offer from a Luxembourg employer, where applicable.
  • Relevant temporary authorisation to stay or work-related approval from the competent Luxembourg authority, where required.
  • Proof of qualifications or professional experience.

4. Student Stay

  • Letter of acceptance from a recognised Luxembourg educational institution.
  • Proof of sufficient resources and accommodation.
  • Evidence of any temporary authorisation to stay or residence procedure documents required for study stays over 90 days.

5. Family Reunion or Dependant Visa

  • Proof of relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.).
  • Copy of the sponsor’s Luxembourg residence permit or ID.
  • Proof of financial means from the sponsor.

Optional Supporting Documents

  • Visa Cover Letter explaining travel purpose.
  • Sponsorship Letter (if applicable).
  • Employment letter or proof of student status in home country.
  • Property ownership or lease agreement to show ties to home country.

Translation and Authentication Requirements

  • Documents may need to be translated if they are not in a language accepted by the consulate, diplomatic mission or authority handling the application. For Luxembourg procedures, documents are commonly accepted in French, German, English or Luxembourgish, but applicants should check the specific instructions for their application.
  • Legalised or apostilled documents may be required for marriage, birth, or educational certificates.

Common Reasons for Document Rejection

  • Expired or invalid passport.
  • Incomplete or unsigned application form.
  • Financial evidence that does not clearly identify the applicant, show available funds, or meet the requirements set by the authority handling the application.
  • Missing translation or legalisation of key documents.

Avoid these mistakes to prevent delays or refusal. See also: Visa Refusals & Reapplications (2026).

Tips for Preparing Your File

  • Organise documents in the same order as listed in this checklist.
  • Keep copies of everything you submit.
  • Use clear, legible scans for digital uploads.
  • Submit only official or certified documents.
