Travellers who need a Ghana visa must meet specific eligibility criteria before a visa can be granted. These requirements ensure applicants have a legitimate reason for travel, comply with entry laws, and pose no security or health risks. This guide outlines who is eligible to apply for a Ghana visa in 2026, including exceptions and special categories.


Who Needs a Visa to Enter Ghana?

Foreign nationals must hold a valid visa or entry permit where required, unless they are exempt, including ECOWAS nationals and nationals of countries with specific bilateral visa exemption agreements. A visa may be issued for tourism, study, business, or transit purposes.

  • Citizens of ECOWAS countries (e.g., Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo) do not require a visa.
  • Diplomatic and Service passport holders from certain countries may be visa-exempt.
  • Passengers on direct airside transit are exempt from obtaining visas.

General Eligibility Requirements (2026)

  • Good Character: No record of criminal or immigration offences.

Special Categories of Applicants

Business Travellers

  • Must provide an official invitation letter from a Ghanaian company.
  • Certificate of incorporation of the inviting company.
  • Letter from employer confirming purpose and duration of travel.

Students

  • Offer or admission letter from a recognised institution in Ghana.
  • Evidence of financial means whilst in Ghana.
  • Parental consent for minors (under 18).

Family & Visitor Visa Applicants

  • Invitation letter from host in Ghana, with ID or residence permit copy.
  • Proof of family relationship (birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc.).
  • Evidence of host’s ability to support the visitor financially (if applicable).

Transit Passengers

  • Travel itinerary.
  • Valid visa for the final destination country (if required).

Visa Exemption Categories

The following travellers are exempt from Ghana visa requirements:

  • Holders of diplomatic or Service passports of selected countries, and holders of official passports of some specialised agencies listed in the Visa Regime of Ghana.
  • Citizens of ECOWAS member states.
  • Persons in direct airside transit.
  • Nationals of countries with which the Government of Ghana has specific bilateral agreements.
