How to apply for a US visa or ESTA
The steps below are the general shape of a US visa application, or an ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program. Your exact requirements depend on your nationality, the visa category you need and your circumstances, so always confirm against the official U.S. Department of State pages linked on this page.
Decide whether you need a visa or an ESTA
If you are a citizen or national of a Visa Waiver Program country travelling for tourism or business for up to 90 days, you may travel with an approved ESTA instead of a visa. Otherwise, you apply for the visa category that matches your purpose.
Choose the right visa category
US visas are grouped into categories by purpose โ visitor (B-1/B-2), student (F/M), exchange visitor (J) and many others. Use the official all-visa-categories directory to identify the correct one before you apply.
Complete the official application
Visa applications are made through the official U.S. Department of State process, which typically includes an online application and, for many applicants, an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Follow the instructions for your category on the official pages.
Approval does not guarantee entry
Whether you hold a visa or an approved ESTA, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer makes the final decision on entry at the port of entry. Carry the documents your category requires.
