Since then, the European team has added players from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, and Sweden to Great Britain and Ireland players.
Europe has won eleven times in a row and once in a tie-breaker since 1979, whereas the United States has won nine times in that time. Compared to the United States two victories since 1979, Europe has won four times (in 1987, 1995, 2004, and 2012) on foreign soil (in 1981 and 1993). Between 1995 and 2014, eight of the ten Ryder Cups were won by Europe.
The Ryder Cup was played on the Straits course at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin, from 24 September to 26 September 2021. With a 19-9 victory over Europe, the United States won the competition with the most significant margin of victory ever (since the inclusion of Continental Europe in 1979).
The Ryder Cup moved to even years in 2002 after being delayed in 2001 owing to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Up to that moment, it has been performed every odd-numbered year. Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the event was postponed from 2020 to 2021, when it returned to odd years.
The Ryder Cup, its alternate-year non-European counterpart (the Presidents Cup), and its women’s equivalent (the Solheim Cup) are still exceptions in the world of professional sports because the competing professionals do not receive prize money, despite being high-profile events that generate significant amounts of money in television, sponsorship, ticket, and merchandise sales.
