This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, Regulated Immigration Advisor. For current rules and requirements, see our guide on How to Apply for a Colombia Visa.

Visitors to Colombia must understand which activities are permitted and which are prohibited under their visa or visa-free entry status. Engaging in unauthorised activities may lead to fines, cancellation of entry permission, or deportation. This page outlines what travellers are allowed to do during their stay and activities that are not authorised under Colombian immigration law.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Valid passport with at least six (6) months validity from the date of entry.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself during your stay.
  • Return or onward travel ticket confirming exit from Colombia within the permitted stay.
  • Completed entry or visa application form, as applicable.
  • Evidence of purpose of visit such as hotel booking, invitation letter, or event registration.

Permitted Activities

  • Tourism and Leisure: Visitors may explore Colombia’s cities, natural attractions, and cultural events. Activities such as sightseeing, attending festivals, or visiting family and friends are allowed.
  • Business Visits: Attending business meetings, negotiations, or conferences is permitted, provided there is no paid employment in Colombia.
  • Short-Term Training or Academic Events: Participation in workshops, seminars, or short-term training courses that do not lead to formal qualifications is allowed.
  • Journalism and Research: Journalistic or research assignments are permitted if properly declared to the Colombian authorities.
  • Medical Treatment: Visitors may receive medical treatment or accompany relatives undergoing healthcare in Colombia.

Non-Permitted Activities

  • Employment or Paid Work: Engaging in any form of paid employment or providing services to a Colombian employer is not authorised under visitor status.
  • Receiving Payment: Receiving wages or remuneration from a Colombian source is prohibited without the correct visa type.
  • Long-Term Study: Enrolling in degree programmes or full-time academic courses requires a student visa.
  • Political or Religious Activities: Participation in political campaigns or unauthorised religious missions is not allowed.
  • Overstaying: Exceeding the 90-day stay (extendable once to a maximum of 180 days per year) may lead to fines or re-entry bans.

Processing Times & Validity

Visitors entering Colombia under visa exemption or with a visitor visa are generally granted permission to stay for up to 90 days. This period can often be extended for an additional 90 days through Migración Colombia. Processing times for visa applications vary, typically ranging from a few working days to two weeks depending on the applicant’s nationality and documentation completeness.
