Mexico visa exemption and the tourist card (FMM)

Whether you need a visa for Mexico, and how you enter, depends on your nationality and the purpose of your trip. This page explains visa exemption and the tourist card in plain language; always confirm your own situation with the official SRE consular guidance.

Visa exemption for many nationalities

Mexico’s consular authorities state that nationals of many countries may enter as non-lucrative visitors — for tourism, business, transit, study or medical reasons — without a visa. Those who are not exempt must apply for a visitor visa at a Mexican consulate.

The tourist card (FMM / FMMD)

Visitors typically enter on the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM). For air arrivals this is issued digitally as the FMMD. According to the INM it is a single-entry document valid for a stay of up to 180 days.

What entry as a visitor does not allow

Entering as a non-lucrative visitor does not authorise paid work in Mexico, and it is not residence. Longer stays and residence use the temporary or permanent resident routes completed at the INM.
