How to apply for a Schengen visa
The steps below are the general shape of a Schengen short-stay visa application. Your exact requirements depend on your nationality, the country you are visiting and your circumstances, so always confirm against the official European Commission pages linked on this page.
Apply at your main destination
According to the European Commission, you apply for a Schengen visa at the consulate or embassy of the country that is your main destination — where you will spend the most time. If you are visiting several countries for equal lengths of time, you apply to the country you will enter first.
Use the official EU guidance
The official “Applying for a Schengen visa” pages set out who needs a visa, what to prepare and where to lodge your application. Use the official European Commission visa-policy pages rather than third-party sites, which are not the government service.
Apply in good time
Consulates ask you to apply within a set window before travel and processing takes time, so start early. Confirm the current timing and appointment process with the consulate of your main destination via the official guidance.
