Vatican City is the world's smallest sovereign state and has no conventional visa system of its own. For ordinary visitors it is entered freely from Italian territory, so whether you need a visa depends on whether your nationality and purpose satisfy Italy's Schengen entry rules rather than any Vatican requirement. Residence inside the State, access to its non-public areas and Vatican citizenship are separate matters governed by Vatican City State's own Law on Citizenship, Residence and Access and administered by the Governorate of Vatican City State.

Vatican City Visa
While Vatican City is not a formal member of the Schengen Area, it is entirely accessible via Italy, a Schengen member state. Therefore, entry into Vatican City is governed by Italian and Schengen border regulations. This means that all visitors—regardless of their travel purpose or intended duration—must meet Schengen Area entry requirements.
Travellers from visa-exempt countries may soon be required to obtain ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) approval, with the system expected to launch in Q4 2026.
Transit via Italy (Schengen Zone)
Vatican City can only be accessed via Italy. Accordingly, all travellers must:
- Comply with Italian (Schengen) visa and border entry requirements
- Hold either: A valid Schengen visa, or
- ETIAS authorisation (starting Q4 2026 for visa-free nationals)
Who Needs a Visa to Visit Vatican City?
While Vatican City does not issue its own visas, access is only possible through Italy. Therefore:
From late 2026, visa-exempt nationals (e.g. UK, US, Canada, Australia) will be required to obtain ETIAS authorisation before travelling to Vatican City via Italy
- Citizens of Schengen Zone countries may enter Vatican City without a visa using a valid national ID card
- Non-Schengen nationals who currently enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen Area may continue to visit without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period
- Travellers requiring a visa to enter the Schengen Area (e.g. through Italy) must obtain a Schengen visa prior to arrival
Eligibility to Apply for a Vatican City Visa
To enter Vatican City, non-Schengen nationals requiring a visa must apply for a Schengen visa through the Italian consulate or embassy in their country of residence. Required documentation includes:
- A passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, issued within the last 10 years, and containing at least one blank page
- Proof of accommodation or invitation from a hosting entity
- Return or onward flight documentation
- Travel itinerary and supporting documents (e.g. conference or pilgrimage registration)
- Evidence of sufficient financial resources for the duration of stay
- Travel medical insurance (not mandatory but highly recommended)
- Visa applicants must verify current requirements through their local Italian consulate
Processing Time for Vatican City Visas (Schengen Visa)
Applicants are advised to apply between 6 months and 3 weeks before travel
- Standard processing: Up to 15 calendar days
- In complex cases, processing may take up to 45 days
