Schengen Visa Biometric Enrolment Process (2025)

This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, UK Solicitor and Regulated Immigration Advisor, to ensure accuracy under current Schengen visa procedures. You can confirm biometric enrolment guidance through Our Schengen Visa Guidance.

All applicants for a Schengen Visa are required to provide biometric data as part of the visa application process. This step is mandatory for identity verification and is used to enhance the security of travel within the Schengen Area. The biometric process involves capturing fingerprints and a facial photograph at a designated Visa Application Centre (VAC).

What Is Biometric Data?

Biometric data refers to your fingerprints and digital facial image collected during the visa appointment. This information is stored securely in the Visa Information System (VIS), which is shared across all Schengen countries to prevent identity fraud and duplication of visa applications.

Who Needs to Give Biometrics?

Most Schengen Visa applicants must provide biometric data in person. The following categories are typically required to enrol:

  • All applicants aged 12 and above.
  • First-time Schengen visa applicants.
  • Applicants whose biometric data was collected more than 59 months ago.

Children under 12 and certain diplomatic or official passport holders are exempt from this requirement.

When and Where to Give Biometrics

Biometric enrolment takes place during your visa appointment at the selected Visa Application Centre. The process usually takes around 10–15 minutes. Applicants must attend the appointment in person, as biometrics cannot be submitted by mail or proxy.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

  1. Arrive at the visa centre at your scheduled appointment time.
  2. Provide your passport, application form, and appointment confirmation.
  3. Your fingerprints (10 in total) will be scanned digitally.
  4. A photograph of your face will be taken on-site.
  5. You will then submit your supporting documents and pay any applicable fees.

How Long Are Biometrics Valid?

Once recorded, your biometric data remains valid for 59 months (approximately five years). If you apply for another Schengen Visa within this period, you will generally not need to give biometrics again unless requested by the consulate.

Why Biometrics Are Important

Biometric verification is used to confirm the identity of travellers entering and leaving the Schengen Area. It ensures the accuracy of visa records, helps detect duplicate or fraudulent applications, and speeds up future border crossings for returning travellers.

Exemptions and Special Cases

  • Children under 12 years old are exempt from fingerprinting.
  • Heads of state, government officials, and members of official delegations may be exempt when travelling for official purposes.
  • Applicants with physical disabilities preventing fingerprint collection may be granted an exemption with medical proof.
