Romania Visa Application Guide (2025)
This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, Regulated Immigration Advisor, to ensure accuracy under current EU and Romanian immigration guidance.
Applying for a Romania Visa involves a combination of online submission and in-person verification.
All visa applications are processed by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) through the Romania eVisa Portal and, in many cases, through the VFS Global network of authorised visa centres.
Step 1: Determine Your Visa Type
Before applying, determine which category of Romania visa applies to your travel purpose:
- Type C (Short-Stay): Tourism, business, medical treatment, or family visits for up to 90 days.
- Type D (Long-Stay): Work, study, family reunification, or research exceeding 90 days.
- Type A (Airport Transit): Transit through a Romanian airport without entering the country.
Check Visa Eligibility Requirements (2025) before submitting your application.
Step 2: Complete the Online Application Form
All applications must be initiated online via the official Romania eVisa Portal.
You will be required to:
- Create a user account on the eVisa platform.
- Select your visa category and purpose of travel.
- Enter your personal, travel, and contact details accurately.
- Upload digital copies of supporting documents (passport, photo, proof of accommodation, travel insurance, etc.).
Once the form is complete, submit it online and download your confirmation sheet for the next step.
Step 3: Book an Appointment
After submitting your online application, you must book an appointment for biometrics and document verification.
Appointments can be scheduled through:
- Your nearest Romanian embassy or consulate, or
- An authorised VFS Global centre (where available).
Bring printed copies of your online application confirmation and supporting documents to the appointment.
Step 4: Prepare and Submit Documents
Applicants must present both original and photocopied documents that meet the MAE’s requirements.
For a full checklist, refer to Visa Documents Required (2025).
- All documents must be in Romanian or English, and translated if issued in another language.
- Financial proof (bank statements, employment letters) should cover at least the previous three months.
- All supporting documentation must be clear and legible.
Step 5: Attend Your Visa Appointment
During your appointment:
- Provide biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo).
- Submit your original documents and application form.
- Pay the applicable visa fee (cash, card, or bank transfer, depending on location).
- Receive a tracking number to follow your application’s progress.
Step 6: Wait for Processing
Visa processing times depend on your nationality and visa type:
- Short-stay visas: 10–15 working days.
- Long-stay visas: 30–60 calendar days.
You can track your visa status online using the eVisa portal or the VFS Global tracking system.
Step 7: Receive Your Decision
Once a decision has been made:
- If approved: A visa sticker will be placed in your passport showing entry type, duration, and validity period.
- If refused: You will receive a written decision with the reasons for refusal and guidance on appeal or reapplication.
See Visa Refusal Reasons (2025) for more information.
Step 8: After Arrival in Romania
If you hold a long-stay (Type D) visa, you must apply for a residence permit at the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) within 30 days of arrival.
Short-stay visa holders (Type C) do not need to register but must depart within 90 days.
Application Tips for 2025
- Apply at least 15 days before travel but no more than 90 days in advance.
- Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your return date.
- Provide consistent and verifiable documentation, discrepancies can delay processing.
- Always keep a copy of your submitted application and receipts.
Where to Apply
Romanian visa applications can be submitted through:
- Romanian Embassies or Consulates in your home country.
- VFS Global Centres (available in select locations).
- Partner missions representing Romania (for applicants in countries without Romanian diplomatic offices).
