Travellers who need to pass through Romania en route to another destination may require a Romania Transit Visa. The Romanian transit visa allows short-term passage through Romanian territory by air, road, or rail, depending on the applicant’s nationality and travel route. This visa type is regulated by EU Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009 and Romanian Government Emergency Ordinance No. 194/2002 on the Regime of Foreigners.

Types of Romania Transit Visa

Romania issues two categories of transit visas:

  • Type A — Airport Transit Visa: For travellers passing through the international transit area of a Romanian airport without entering the country.
  • Type B — Land or Seaport Transit Visa: For travellers transiting through Romania by road, rail, or sea while en route to a third country.

Each visa type is issued for a maximum of 5 days and may allow single, double, or multiple entries depending on the applicant’s itinerary.

Who Needs a Romania Transit Visa

You must apply for a transit visa if you:

  • Hold a passport from a non-EU/EEA country that requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area or Romania.
  • Will be changing planes at a Romanian airport and need to pass through border control.
  • Are travelling overland through Romania (for example, by bus, train, or car) to reach another country.

Citizens of visa-exempt countries (such as the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, and Australia) do not need a Romania transit visa provided they remain in the international transit area or depart within 90 days.

Who Is Exempt

You are exempt from a Romania Transit Visa if you hold any of the following:

  • A valid Schengen visa (Type C or D),
  • A Schengen residence permit issued by any member state,
  • A valid EU, EEA, or Swiss residence card,
  • A valid UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), or
  • A valid long-stay visa from another EU country.

Documents Required

Applicants must provide documentation supporting their travel route and final destination. Required documents include:

  • A valid passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months beyond the intended transit.
  • Visa for the destination country (if required).
  • Confirmed flight, train, or bus tickets showing Romania as a transit point.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your journey.
  • Travel insurance covering a minimum of €30,000 in medical expenses.

How to Apply for a Romania Transit Visa

Applications must be made before travelling to Romania, through the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) or an authorised visa centre.

  1. Complete your application online at the Romania eVisa Portal.
  2. Book an appointment at your nearest Romanian embassy or consulate.
  3. Submit biometrics and supporting documents in person.
  4. Wait for confirmation and collect your passport once the visa is issued.

Fees and Processing Times

As of 2025:

  • Visa fee: €80 for adults, €40 for children aged 6 to 11, and free for children under 6.
  • Processing time: 10 to 15 working days on average.

Additional service charges apply if applying through VFS Global.

Conditions of Use

The Romania Transit Visa:

  • Is valid only for transit purposes and does not permit stay beyond 5 days per entry.
  • Cannot be extended or converted into another visa type.
  • Must be used within the validity period stated on the visa sticker.

Important Notes for Air Transit

  • Travellers who remain in the international transit area of a Romanian airport do not normally pass border control and may not require a visa.
  • Those changing airports (e.g., Bucharest Otopeni to Cluj-Napoca) will need to enter Romania and therefore require a Type A or B visa, depending on the route.

Romania Transit Airports

The following airports offer international transit facilities:

  • Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP): Bucharest.
  • Cluj-Napoca International Airport (CLJ).
  • Timișoara Traian Vuia International Airport (TSR).
  • Iași International Airport (IAS).
