Luxembourg Visa Eligibility Requirements (2025)

This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, UK Solicitor and Regulated Immigration Advisor, to ensure accuracy under current EU and Luxembourg immigration guidance. You can confirm current rates and costs through our Luxembourg Visa Application Guide.

To apply for a Luxembourg visa in 2025, you must meet specific eligibility requirements set by the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These vary depending on your nationality, travel purpose, and visa category (short-stay or long-stay). Understanding these criteria before applying can help you avoid unnecessary refusals or delays.

Who Needs a Visa for Luxembourg?

Citizens of countries **outside the EU/EEA or Schengen Zone** generally require a visa to enter Luxembourg. You must apply for a visa if you:

  • Are from a non-Schengen country without a visa exemption agreement.
  • Plan to stay in Luxembourg for more than 90 days.
  • Intend to work, study, or join a family member living in Luxembourg.

You do not need a visa if you are:

  • A citizen of an EU/EEA member state or Switzerland.
  • Holding a valid Schengen visa or residence permit issued by another Schengen country.
  • Travelling on diplomatic or official service passports (specific cases only).

Types of Luxembourg Visas

Luxembourg issues different visa types depending on the purpose of travel:

  • Type C – Short-Stay (Schengen Visa): For stays up to 90 days (tourism, business, family visit).
  • Type D – Long-Stay (National Visa): For stays longer than 90 days (work, study, residence).

Each visa category has its own eligibility requirements, documentation, and fees. See also: Documents Checklist (2025).
