Iceland Visa Processing Times (2025)

Iceland Visa Processing Times (2025)

This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, Regulated Immigration Advisor. For application guidance, see How to Apply for an Iceland Visa (2025).

Visa processing times for Iceland vary depending on the applicant’s location, the type of visa, and the time of year. All Iceland visa applications are processed in accordance with the Schengen Visa Code (Regulation 810/2009) and are reviewed either by Icelandic embassies or representing Schengen states such as Denmark or Norway.

Average Processing Times

In 2025, the following timeframes apply to most visa categories:

  • Tourist Visa: 15 to 20 calendar days after document submission.
  • Business Visa: 15 to 25 days depending on company verification.
  • Family or Dependant Visa: 30 to 60 days, as supporting documents require additional review.
  • Student or Long-Stay Visa: 6 to 12 weeks (via Directorate of Immigration).
  • Medical Visa: 10 to 15 days for urgent cases.

Processing time begins once all required documents and biometric data have been received by the embassy.

Factors Affecting Processing Time

Visa processing may take longer in the following cases:

  • Incomplete or inconsistent application documents.
  • High application volume (especially during summer and December holidays).
  • Additional background or security checks required by Schengen authorities.
  • Applications filed through a representing embassy rather than Iceland’s own mission.
  • Public holidays in Iceland or the applicant’s country of residence.

Priority and Express Options

While Iceland does not operate a “super-priority” system, applicants may access priority scheduling through VFS Global in select countries.

  • Priority appointments typically shorten the submission queue, not the embassy review stage.
  • Expedited review (under 10 days) is considered only in documented emergencies, such as medical travel or funerals.
  • See Schengen Priority & Express Services (2025) for eligible cases.

Tracking Your Application

You can track your Iceland visa status online using the reference number issued at submission.

What to Do if Your Visa Is Delayed

If your visa is still being processed after the stated timeframe:

  • Wait at least 30 days before contacting the embassy for non-urgent cases.
  • Provide your application number and date of submission when making inquiries.
  • Do not make travel bookings until a visa decision has been received.
  • Check if your application was referred to the Directorate of Immigration (UTL) for further review.

Post-Decision Timeline

Once approved:

  • Your passport is typically available for collection within 3 to 5 working days at the visa centre.
  • Applicants opting for courier service will receive delivery updates via email or SMS.
  • Visa validity dates will be clearly printed on the visa sticker, confirm before travel.

Peak Season Advisory

During April–August and November–December, Iceland embassies and VFS Global centres experience high demand. Apply at least four weeks before your planned travel date to ensure timely processing.
