Iceland Visa Eligibility and Entry Requirements (2025)
This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, Regulated Immigration Advisor. For application guidance, see How to Apply for an Iceland Visa (2025).
Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, which allows short-term travel within 27 European countries using a single visa. Depending on your nationality, travel purpose, and duration of stay, you may or may not need a visa to enter Iceland in 2025.
Who Needs a Visa to Visit Iceland
You must apply for an Iceland Schengen Visa before travelling if you:
- Are a citizen of a country that is not part of the Schengen visa-free list.
- Do not already hold a valid Schengen visa or residence permit.
- Plan to stay in Iceland (and other Schengen countries) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Applicants from countries such as India, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the Philippines require a Schengen visa for entry.
Who Does Not Need a Visa
Citizens of visa-exempt countries can enter Iceland without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This includes nationals of:
- EU and EEA member states.
- United Kingdom.
- United States.
- Canada.
- Australia.
- New Zealand.
- Japan.
- South Korea.
These travellers must still meet Schengen entry conditions (valid passport, financial means, and return ticket).
Visa-Free Entry Conditions (2025)
Even if you are exempt from visa requirements, border officers in Iceland may ask you to present:
- A valid passport (issued within the past 10 years and valid for at least three months beyond your departure).
- Proof of accommodation for your stay (hotel booking or host invitation).
- Proof of sufficient financial means (€150 per day minimum recommended).
- Return flight or onward travel reservation.
- Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical emergencies.
Failure to meet these conditions may result in entry refusal at the border.
Short-Stay vs Long-Stay Visas
- Short-Stay Visa (Type C): For visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Covers tourism, business, study, and medical travel.
- Long-Stay Visa (Type D): Required for stays longer than 90 days, including work, study, or family reunification. Applications are handled by the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration (UTL).
Schengen 90/180 Rule
Under Schengen regulations, travellers may stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area, including Iceland.
Days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the same total.
Use the Schengen Calculator to track your days of stay accurately.
Eligibility Requirements for a Visa
To qualify for an Iceland visa, you must:
- Hold a valid passport and travel history demonstrating lawful entry/exit behaviour.
- Provide credible evidence of your travel purpose (tourism, study, business, or family visit).
- Have adequate financial means to support yourself during your stay.
- Show proof of accommodation for your entire trip.
- Hold valid travel and health insurance covering the Schengen period.
- Have no record of prior Schengen overstays or deportations.
Health and Security Requirements
All visa applicants must:
- Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) during submission.
- Meet health and public security standards under Icelandic and EU law.
- Provide TB test or vaccination proof if required for long-stay visas.
Special Considerations
- Holders of diplomatic or official passports may be exempt from visa fees or certain documentation requirements.
- Visa-free travellers planning to work or study in Iceland must apply for a residence permit before entering the country.
- Non-EU nationals married to Icelandic or EEA citizens may apply for family reunification rights under Directive 2004/38/EC.
Common Reasons for Visa Refusal
Visa applications are often refused for:
- Insufficient financial documentation or unclear travel purpose.
- Invalid or incomplete travel insurance.
- Unclear accommodation or itinerary details.
- Previous overstays in the Schengen Area.
See Iceland Visa Refusal Reasons (2025) for detailed examples.
