Iceland Student Visa and Study Permit Guide (2025)

Foreign nationals who wish to study in Iceland for longer than 90 days must apply for a Student Visa and a Residence Permit for Studies. Iceland participates in the Schengen Area, so short-term academic visits (under 90 days) can be completed with a Schengen C Visa, while full-degree students require a long-stay permit under the Icelandic Foreign Nationals Act No. 80/2016.

Who Needs an Iceland Student Visa

You must apply for an Iceland Student Visa if you:

• Are a citizen of a country that requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area.
• Plan to study in Iceland for more than 90 days (e.g., university programs, exchange, or long-term courses).
• Have received an official acceptance letter from an accredited Icelandic educational institution.

Students from visa-exempt Schengen countries may enter without a visa but must still apply for a Residence Permit for Studies.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an Iceland Student Visa and residence permit, applicants must:

• Hold an unconditional admission letter from a recognised Icelandic school or university.
• Show proof of sufficient financial means to cover tuition, housing, and living expenses.
• Provide evidence of accommodation in Iceland.
• Hold valid travel and health insurance for the full duration of their stay.
• Have no record of overstaying or immigration violations in the Schengen Area.

Documents Required

Applicants must provide original or certified copies of:

• Completed long-stay visa or residence permit application form.
• Valid passport (minimum six months validity).
• Two recent passport-sized photographs.
• Proof of acceptance/enrolment from the Icelandic institution.
• Bank statements or sponsor letters proving financial capacity.
• Proof of accommodation (rental agreement or university housing confirmation).
• Proof of health insurance coverage.
• Police clearance certificate (if requested).

How to Apply

The application process depends on where you are applying from:

1. From outside Iceland: Submit your application via the nearest Icelandic embassy or VFS Global centre representing Iceland (often through Denmark or Norway).
2. From within Iceland: Apply directly at the Directorate of Immigration (UTL) after arrival (if permitted).
3. Provide biometrics and original documents as required.
4. Await residence permit approval before beginning your studies.

Visa Fees and Processing Time

• Visa application fee: €90 (for short-stay applicants).
• Residence permit processing fee: Approximately ISK 12,000 (subject to change).
• Processing time: 6–12 weeks, depending on embassy workload and study start date.

After Arrival in Iceland

Once you arrive in Iceland:

• Register your residence with Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá).
• Attend your appointment at UTL to submit biometrics and collect your residence card.
• Maintain full-time enrolment and valid insurance during your studies.
• Apply for permit renewal at least one month before your current permit expires.

Part-Time Work Rights

Students with a valid residence permit may apply for limited work rights through the Directorate of Labour (VMST).
Typically, international students can work up to 15 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks.

If Your Application Is Refused

If your application is refused, you will receive a written notice explaining the reasons. You may appeal within 15 days to the Directorate of Immigration.
