If your stay in Canada is nearing its end but you wish to remain longer, you may apply to extend your Canada visa. This process allows visitors, students, and workers to legally prolong their stay without leaving the country. This guide explains how to extend your visa, eligibility criteria, and what to do if your current visa expires soon — including for travelers visiting for the World Cup 2025.

Who Can Apply for a Visa Extension?

You can apply to extend your stay in Canada if:

You currently hold a valid temporary resident visa (visitor, student, or work visa).
Your visa has not yet expired.
You apply at least 30 days before the expiration date.
You continue to meet the conditions of your visa (e.g., financial stability, lawful activities).

Types of Visa Extensions

Visitor Record: For those staying longer as tourists, friends, or family visitors.
Study Permit Extension: For students continuing or resuming their academic program.
Work Permit Extension: For employees or contractors extending their job assignments in Canada.

How to Apply for a Visa Extension (2025)

Visit the official IRCC portal and sign in to your account.
Select “Apply to extend your stay in Canada.”
Complete the online form (IMM 5708 for visitors, IMM 5710 for workers).
Upload required documents including your passport, financial proof, and reason for extension.
Pay the CAD $100 processing fee online.
Submit your application and keep confirmation for records.

After Submitting Your Application

What If Your Visa Has Expired?

If your visa has already expired, you may apply for restoration of status within 90 days. During this period, you cannot work or study until your restoration is approved. Late submissions may result in refusal and require leaving Canada.
