Applying for a UK Spouse Visa from Outside the UK (2025)

This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, UK Solicitor and Regulated Immigration Advisor, to ensure accuracy under current UK immigration policy. Confirm your visa requirements via Our UK Visa Guidance.

Applicants who wish to join their British or settled partners in the UK must apply for a UK Spouse Visa before travelling. This process, known as an “entry clearance” application, must be submitted online from your country of residence and completed through a visa application centre (VAC). This guide explains the process as of October 2025, including documentation, fees, and processing times.

Who Should Apply from Outside the UK?

You must apply from outside the UK if you are:

  • Currently living abroad and wish to join your partner in the UK.
  • Not already in the UK on a visa category eligible for switching (such as FLR(M)).
  • Visiting temporarily and not permitted to switch in-country.

If you are already in the UK on a valid long-term visa, see Apply Inside the UK (FLR(M)).

How to Apply

The application process for a UK Spouse Visa from abroad involves several steps:

  1. Complete the online application form on the official GOV.UK portal.
  2. Pay the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
  3. Book and attend a biometric appointment at your nearest UK Visa Application Centre.
  4. Upload your documents online or use the assisted scanning service.
  5. Submit your passport and await a decision from the UK Home Office.

For a complete document list, visit the Spouse Visa Documents Checklist (2025).
