Visa for Ghana (2026)

Foreign nationals travelling to Ghana must obtain the correct visa before arrival unless exempt under ECOWAS or other visa-free arrangements.

This guide provides an overview of the main visa types available in 2026, including visitor, business, transit, student, work and residence permit, and electronic visa (eVisa) options, along with basic requirements and validity periods.

Do I Need a Visa to Visit Ghana?

A visa is required for most travellers entering Ghana. Exemptions apply to citizens of ECOWAS countries, nationals of other selected visa-exempt countries, certain diplomatic, service or official passport holders, and persons in direct airside transit. Travellers should confirm their visa status before booking flights or accommodation.

General Visa Requirements

All applicants, regardless of visa category, must provide the following:

• Valid passport for at least six months beyond the intended stay in Ghana.
• Completed and signed visa application form.
• A clear, recent passport-sized photo meeting standard visa photo guidelines.
• Proof of accommodation or host invitation letter.
• Financial means to be indicated; bank statements are not required unless specifically requested.
• Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.
• Visa fee payment receipt.

Visa Validity Periods

• Single Entry Visa: Valid for up to 90 days from the date of issue.
• Multiple Entry Visa: validity depends on the issuing mission and visa category.
• Transit Visa: Valid for up to 48 hours.
• Work and Residence Permit: validity depends on the permit category and approval by the Ghana Immigration Service.

Application Methods

• Online (eVisa): Apply here.
• In Person: Apply through the Ghana High Commission, Ghanaian diplomatic mission, consulate, or authorised application centre where available.
• By Mail (select embassies): Some missions allow postal submissions with prepaid return envelopes.

Visa Processing Times (Average)

• Standard eVisa processing is 96 hours; standard mission applications take a minimum of five business days from the time the application is received at the Mission.
• 72hrs Express Service: 3 working days; Priority 24hrs service: 1 working day where available.
• Work and residence permits and student residence permits are handled by the Ghana Immigration Service and depend on the permit category and supporting documents.

Extending Your Visa

Visa or permit extensions can be requested through the Ghana Immigration Service before the permitted stay expires.

The Ghana Immigration Service may extend a visitor’s visa or permit for an initial period of three months and up to a maximum of six months.

Fees & Payment

Visa fees vary based on visa type, duration, service type and application location; from 25 May 2026, holders of African passports are not required to pay visa fees when travelling to Ghana.

Important Notes for Travellers

• Visa approval does not guarantee entry; immigration officers may deny entry at the border if requirements are not met.
• Visitors must leave Ghana before the period of stay endorsed by Ghana Immigration at the point of entry expires, or apply for an extension.
• Overstaying can result in fines or entry bans.
• Always carry a copy of your passport and visa during your stay.
